Meet Michael (Mick)

Engineering Operations Manager Michael (Mick) Stewart joined Gough & Kelly as an Electrical apprentice in 2005. We talk to him about how his role has developed as the company has grown.

How and when did you join Gough & Kelly?

I joined Gough & Kelly around 15 or 16 years ago. I was already enrolled on an electrical apprentice programme but the company that it was with went bust. I knew someone who worked for Gough & Kelly and who said it was a great company. I looked into it, and they were hiring a number of positions, including apprentices. Gough & Kelly then took me on as a second-year electrical apprentice.

How has your career developed?

After I finished my electrical apprenticeship and qualifications, I then decided to move over to the security side of the business. The security element was something that was interesting and different to me, working with more complex systems than ring mains and lighting circuits. I was able to utilise my electrical knowledge while operating in a more diverse role with a lot of different security solutions.

From there, I became a security engineer. I was then promoted to a senior security engineer and eventually to engineering operations manager.

Tell us about a typical day at Gough & Kelly

My day starts bright and early at around seven am. I get in and sort out the engineers, helping them collate and collect the gear they need for the day.

Next, I catch up on customer requirements and deal with queries throughout the day which can involve faults that need to be attended to by a technician, or remotely dialled in to and resolved.

Then I go about booking in and arranging engineer training to ensure they are all up to date with the latest security products also insuring all the RAMS for upcoming jobs are completed and organised.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love that there is a lot of variety in my job. The type of work is vast as there as so many different security systems, each to suit a specific need or customer. There is always plenty to do, with organising and preparing our engineers and ad hoc customer requirements.

I love working here and having the opportunity to learn and move up within the business.
